Figuring out how to secure your home doesn’t need to be a monstrous chore. Use these simple 5 steps as the basics of your safety practice and mindset. The most important element of all safety is being aware and identifying any weak links in your safety tools. This is a great starting point when thinking safety. At Secure Rite, we believe that prevention is better than cure when it comes to crime. Here are 5 preventative measures to take when safeguarding your home or business.

1. Make it a habit to secure your doors

One of the more frequent crime tactics is actually events where the perpetrator simply strolled into a home or business through the front door. This may seem unlikely but it’s true more often than not. It’s almost as if we believe that there could be no way someone would dare to break in through the front door- and that’s where we go wrong.  Don’t help a burglar stroll in through the front door. Always lock your doors and gates religiously. Ensure door frames are strong, the hinges are protected. Slam lock doors and gates are great as they lock automatically.

2. Secure those windows

Next to doors, windows are the most common entry points for burglars. Unfortunately, manufacturer latches on windows aren’t always as effective as they can be—and sometimes they’re downright pointless. If you’re aware that your windows could be an easy entry point for burglars, beef up security with burglar bars, anti- smash and grab film and motion sensors.

3. Use Light Strategically

Vandals, burglars, and other criminals don’t like to be in the spotlight. Keep unwanted behaviours at bay with ample outdoor lighting that lights up your most vulnerable areas around your property. Place lights around your front and back yards, along pathways, and near the garage and other outdoor structures. Not only will you make intruders skittish, you’ll also cut down your risk of a stumble on your way up the front steps. Make your outdoor security lights even more.

4. The Garage is on their radar

This entry point to your home/ business is fast becoming more popular with criminals. And even if they can’t access your main property from the garage, chances are you have plenty of good stuff stored in the garage. Make it a habit to lock all doors to the garage—both interior and exterior. You may also consider keeping your garage door opener in the house. That way a burglar can’t grab it out of your car. And if you use a security code to open the garage, make sure you keep it secret and never enter it in front of delivery people, neighbours, or anyone else. Remember to cover garage windows to hide the goodies inside.

5. Eliminate Hiding Places

Trees and shrubs may give your house curb appeal, but they also give burglars a handy place to hide. Trim down trees and plants close to your home that could be used for cover. Opt for smaller flowers and bushes instead. If you have trees near windows, either remove them or reinforce those windows with extra security. And don’t neglect the rest of your home’s exterior—use these best practices to keep things locked up tight.

  • Always put away stools and ladders.
  • Don’t tempt thieves by leaving pricey goods on display in the yard.
  • Add security signs and stickers.
